Default making beats?

It's not really 'my thing'... too damn old for it, but trying to dig up some thoughts for another person...

Sooooo.... what do you love to use? what vst's, vsti's, etc.

[OMG I just did a typo BST... hahaha ya know?]

instructional videos teaching [any instrument] are a terrific source for solo samples to chop and warp if they are going for collage style at, otherwise vstis and oneshot collections would be the best starting point

yes... he\she is a rather serious musician, highly skilled but not in the area of 'making beats' in the way it is done these days with virtual stuff...

so I'm just asking others here what they like, don't like, love, etc.

If they have reasons why to the above... all the better.

Of course you know that it can be done in Reaper using various plugins, but for someone not already into all this daw stuff, it could be very confusing. In other words, learning Reaper, sampling, synthesis, fx processing. But if this person is a musician with interests in beatmaking, chances are that he/she is already at least somewhat familiar with some of this stuff.

Problem is though, we don't know what this person is into in terms of music. For example, a 'beat' might mean a 90's hip hop thing using mostly samples and loops, like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y1Emb7Jyks It could be something synth based like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoCg9QvpXHM

Etc. to infinity.

I would get this person to make a list of songs that are personally musically appealing before trying to make any recommendations.

Kind of weird question.

I can tell you for sure if the person says "beats" he means trap or hop.

In that case Poise, serum, and diva.

FYI, I'm the person hopi is referring to for this post. I don't have a specific list of songs, but I'm definitely more interested in grooves/drum sounds from the EDM realm. I.e. the Bodzin track that brainwreck linked to peaks my interest more than the 90s hip hop.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I would say to get a hardware synth that you like the sound of and that you can put your hands on all the parameters without having to try to come up with MIDI controller mapping schemes, mousing everything else, and diving through menus as you would be doing with soft synths. In other words, get an instrument.

Learn to shape sounds with it - drums, bass, noise, glitches, etc. - and start making music with it. Jumping into the jungle of soft synths and dealing with all things computer related before you have even gotten going is counterproductive to making music, in my opinion.

After that, I would say to start sampling all sorts of sounds, including sounds from your synth. Reaper has a builtin sampler that is adequate for that, although it isn't exactly user friendly in relation to it's limited functionality.

I love my NI Maschine. Great sounds, great workflow, great hardware and plays nice with Reaper. Can handle any genre and the new Mikro is only $250.
