Default GUI bitmap resolution?

Some commercial plugins have very detailed, elegant GUIs (appears high resolution) while others look like a 1980's video game (low resolution).

Is there something in the plugin GUI specs that controls this appearance - or is it just a matter of the quality of artwork used (e.g., "Photoshop quality" vs. "Paint quality")?

It seems no matter how good my artwork is 96dpi just has a "cheap" look to it. Is there a higher resolution mode or trick for producing high quality plugin graphics?

on a retina screen? plug-ins with bitmap guis need to include hi-dpi bitmap resources and render guis at the right resolution. iPlug1 didn't do this. iPlug2 does.
