Default Changing volume of one channel in stereo AIFF

Hello. I'm new to Reaper, but not to digital audio. I recorded two sides of a Skype conversation, panned hard right and hard left. In Reaper, I see the two channels, and one is much louder than the other. I want to reduce the volume of the louder side. In the software I am used to (Amadeus) I would split the track into two mono tracks, reduce the volume on one, and then merge it with the other back into a stereo track.

How would I do that in Reaper?

My question seems much simpler than the other stereo/mono questions people here ask, but I can't find an obvious answer.

Is it as simple as changing Take channel mode: right, applying the effect, and then Take channel mode: normal?

Thanks

Jeremy

rt clk on the track and look for the explode sub menu...

use that to make two mono tracks, one from each side of the stereo track ...and then go from there.
