Default How do I create keyboard/synth parts?

I think I'll stick to this section after making I fool of myself in the Reaper Feature Requests Section with my post titled "Triplet & Swing Rhythms Created In Reaper". But at least I found out what I needed to know thanks to Tallisman.

So I've worked out how to create Drum tracks by dragging drum samples into the excellent ReaDrums and I've worked out how to use the Midi Event window to create rhythm patterns. I've also found out that you're not limited to the quantize settings in the drop down list against (notes) in the Midi event window and that you can type in what you want (e.g. 1/24). Thanks again to Tallisman for this.

Now I'd like to create keyboard parts, without using the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth. I notice there's a ReaSynth. Can I drag in samples like I do with ReaDrums (I expect it's probably not that simple). Are there any free keyboard/synth plugins I can experiment with. Once I know what I'm doing I'm happy to pay for stuff, but I'd like to experiment first. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Making a synth piece is done the same way you edited drum patterns in MIDI, sorta.
Just insert a new track, insert a new MIDI item in the track, throw whatever synth plugin in the FX bin for the track (look here for good plugs: http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=563) and then edit your MIDI item until it sounds so good you can't stand yourself.

Default Thanks For Your Advice

Many thanks. I'll give this a try.

This sort of stuff doesn't seem to be covered by the pdf manual, but I expect it's obvious if you're familiar with recording on a computer (which I'm not).

Don't forget Reaper's virtual MIDI keyboard. I have hammered in pads using the computer keyboard that way. It's do-able...

There are a gazillion synths and plugins at the KVR site
( http://www.kvraudio.com/ ). I would like to help you out with your questions but I am just getting started with my first Reaper project so I'm a bit of a noob myself.

Have look at the User Guide (http://www.cockos.com/wiki/index.php/REAPER_User_Guide) page 69. There is one of Nicholas's excellent worked examples using ReaSynth. The same principles apply to any software synth you want to use.

edit - I don't see any fools here, just people with good questions at varying levels
