Default snap offset (to peak value)

i use auto trim/split items a lot since i track out individual drums into reaper from my sampler. i get rid of a lot of empty space and i've enjoyed using this function to blast out all the silence.

however, i'd love a little more description on the option to "snap offset to peak value."

as i've typed this question, i have played a bit and i see that it is used as a "pseudo edge" in terms of snapping - ie say you had a pickup that led into a melody. you could apply snap offset to the first notes of the melody AFTER the pickup, and use the snap offset to guide it, correct?

wow.
