Default [SOLVED] How to "Crop" recorded MIDI in a clip? (Answer: "Glue items")

I've been using REAPER for almost a year now, so this one is a bit embarrassing to ask.

tl;dr = "I want picture #2 to be the only MIDI content in the clip, and loopable."

Can't seem to find a way to crop recorded MIDI clips. A picture is worth a thousand words, so let me try to explain:
  • [1] I record some MIDI, most of it is junk
  • I only want to keep a section of it
  • So I select the section I want, and razor-select cut it out
  • [2] Then I paste it, onto a new track or further in the same track, wherever

Problem is, the "cropped" track section isn't really cut. It still has all the same MIDI as the piece I cut out.

So if I try to loop it [3], it doesn't loop -- it just starts to bleed back over into all the other stuff I thought I was cropping out.

It's like I'm looking at a "window" of MIDI, and the notes are all there, just hidden:

That did the trick -- thank you so much! It was driving me mad.

Is "Glue" not a very odd name for this action? I'm not sure I understand the connection between "gluing" the selected media-item area and the result being "cropping" the MIDI.

I have used "glue" to join together multiple items into one but didn't know you could use it like this.

---

I created a custom action: "Crop Item to Selection" which is just "Glue items" so I don't forget.

What's confusing is that there are several actions which have "crop" in their name -- but none of them do this exact thing:

And then I added it to my right-click menu for media items =D

While digging through "Glue" based actions, I found out I have a little tool by Breeder that is useful for this too. In case anyone else wants to use it, it's called "Glue tool.lua":

Yes, Glue is perhaps an odd term but the idea |(as I understand it) is that Glue-ing always creates a new item in the project (and thus increases the space written to disk I believe). So applying it to a single item is sort of gluing it to itself...
I don't know what would a better expression - maybe Consolidate or Integrate or Add to Pool?
For the moment though I think we are stuck with it. 😊
I'll get my coat...

Ahh that makes a fair bit of sense actually.

Yeah ha, I'd agree that is easier to follow in this context too
