Default Rendering, Low Quality?

I'm rendering a REAPER project and am having some difficulty with the quality of my output file. I listen to the project in REAPER and the snare has a nice "snap" to it. When rendered, that snap is gone. It sounds splashy, compressed.

IDK how to fix this or what I'm missing.

I was rendering to mp3 using lame encoder, constant bit rate, 320 kbps, Maximum q=0 (slow)

I'm also using full-speed Offline and a 44100 sample rate.

I thought it was maybe my Waves L1 settings, re: dithering or something, but I disabled that and am still getting the same results.

I tried going to wav instead, 24-bit PCM. Same.

What am I missing?

Hm,m. Just for kicks I tried rendering to a wav file with a 48K sample rate. That fixes it. So is this just an artifact of sample rate? Is it conceivable that I could hear a difference in a snare rendered to 44K as opposed to 48?

Check the "Render resample mode"? (Project settings)

What's your project sample rate?

is L1 set to re-quantize to something below 24 bits?

The render resample mode is "Good 192pt (Sinc)"

The project sample rate defaults to my hardware rate, which is 44.1 kHz. The media items are 48 kHz.

The L1 quantize is set to 24-bit. The dither is T1.

Shaping is the first selection (flat line) and the domain is true peak

If your mproject is an higher sample rate set the resample mode to HQ EXTREME, there's a big difference between this resample modes.
Also be sure to check the box "process FX at project sample rate".

Also, this is just a personal advice, export always at the same samplerate you're working and resample into a very good resample alghorhythm (i like SOX a lot and Izotope).
