Default EZ way to lay drums (patterns & beats) in Native Linux REAPER. fast - free

Sometimes it gets hard being a singer/songwriter to get your work flow going fast and intuitive while dealing with all the possible choices out there.
For quick (and good) DRUMS PATTERNS OR BEATS... the following will get you going in NO TIME!

1) Download and install HYDROGEN from package manager (or software manager in Linux Mint) or from their site: http://hydrogen-music.org [download old or new or stable or beta version such as; Hydrogen 0.9.7] This is a stand alone free drum machine.

{Notes: Some basic specs of hydrogen are exporting @ 16bit/44.1Khz 24bit/48khz 32bit/96Khz etc. (PCM or VBR) .WAV or AIFF or FLACC or OGG or midi}

2) Once you have downloaded HYDROGEN open it up... click on some of the drum samples to make a beat...(black dots will appear) under 'PROJECT' menu use "Save as..." and give it a name.

3) NEXT Click on PROJECT upper left tool bar MENU then CLICK "Export Song" ...A MENU should APPEAR... under template choose a hertz rate and bit rate *FOR NOOBS LEAVE IT SET FOR 44.1Khz 16 bit!

5) *In BROWSER menu make sure it exports the WAV file to "MUSIC" folder:
should look like: /HOME/JOHN DOE/MUSIC/testsong.wav*
...at the top of menu. (make sure that .wav is at end/if need be change it)

6) HIT "EXPORT" and your sample is saved to your music folder.

7) open up REAPER. ...then under FILE>PROJECT SETTINGS (in the upper left corner of REAPER DAW - the first line is PROJECT SAMPLE RATE make sure that is set to 16 bit! leave the rest alone

8) then go to "Insert" (the top menu bar) OPEN it up.

8) CLICK on "Media File..."

9) find the file and DOUBLE CLICK on the MUSIC FILE...(that you just made in Hydrogen) (it should be in Music folder) AND it should be imported onto a track that appears...in REAPER!

10) You are done... play your drum sample YAY! Enjoy repeat...

"THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO EXPORT YOUR HYDROGEN DRUM SAMPLE AS A 'SONG'

Exporting a DRUM samples from Hydrogen to Reaper should take a few seconds -- once you do it a few times... REAPER is also sooooo forgiving compared with other DAWS that -- You usually don't even have to mess with the Hertz or Bit rate at all. AMAZING! I can run 44.1Khz/16bit even while the project is set to 48Khz/24bit or what ever... fascinatingly good. You can even use REAPER as a turntable... left click AND HOLD on white/black triangle (near top of timeline) and move your mouse back or forward like a DJ turntable... your music sample will play forward and backwards: slow or fast... sometimes I record that thru a speaker! nice sounds and ideas! you can do midi tracks and other things once you get a hang of learning curve...Final idea - you can cut the drum sample up in reaper re-track, duplicate etc...

Default Continued...

REMEMBER... you can download many other drum kits (sounds) from around the world for free... and use Hydrogen with those new sounds OR sample your own sounds... you are not limited to just drums... try voice or guitar or what ever you can think of... get that creativity going... anybody have some other tips for simple drum patterns to transport into REAPER?

Remember you have a very good step sequencer embedded in Reaper (MegaBaby sequencer).

For more info look here.

I don't understand the need to export the samples from Hydrogen.
The Hydrogen samples are already available as wav or flac files in their respective folders under /usr/share/hydrogen/data/drumkits/, and making beats directly in Reaper is no more difficult than doing it in Hydrogen.

I haven't used Hydrogen in many years, but if you like to make drum parts in Hydrogen I recall it also exports your songs in general midi format - so you can import that into REAPER and do further editing there and use the myriad of options for drum samplers in REAPER, whether SM Drumkit, Drumgizmo, SFZ kits, AVL drumkits, etc. when it comes to getting the sound you want. You might have to tweak the mapping for use with some plugins, but it is easy to select all notes of a certain number in the midi editor and shift them to the right key.

Default Yes you can make drum patterns with Megababy & Samplematic

Yes you do not have to export a wav file from Hydrogen; but some people do not know where to find where Hydrogen stores the wav file. If you are lost you can export to desktop or music file and know where they are when you import into REAPER.

And yes Megababy is great for making patterns and loops... but some people have a little trouble getting started importing a drum map & the learning curve is a little steeper IMO.

If you want to lay some drum patterns within REAPER; I would suggest to use SampleOmatic5000 by doing the following...

1) INSERT a new TRACK

2) then Hold alt / left click on the track...and drag cursor(to make it a
midi track)

3) Hit "fx" (on track menu) and then find and double click on
"SamplOmatic5000". (plugin)

4) Click on "browser" inside SampleOmatic5000 AND download a drumfile into
it. (by opening it)
(clicking on the black box shud play sample)

5) then double left click your new Midi Track; A PIANO ROLL WILL APPEAR!

6) ...then left click drag to write on piano roll... hit play

you should be all set...

Good Ideas ... anyone else have fast or ez ways to make drum beats? tc
