Default Monitor Recommendations for Home Studio

Hey all,

I was wondering if anybody has any recommendations for Mini Active Full-range Reference Monitors? I like to primarily mix at low to mid volumes, and am looking for something with good range and a balanced/flat/uncolored sound that could help me mix for digital downloads, blog postings, etc..

I had a pair of Behringer Truth monitors. I liked the overall sound, but I'm left doubting the companies' commitment to quality since they suffered from poor low range response- farting and vibrating after only 3 months use at mid volume. Pianos seemed to be particularly problematic for them. I had planned on getting them fixed with the warranty, but new-fatherhood responsibilities kept that from happening and the warranty lapsed.

I'd like to keep my purchase in the 100-$450 range (for the pair). Here's what I'm looking at:
Avantone Active MixCubes
Yamaha HS50M
M-Audio Studiophile AV 20
Alesis M1 Active 520
M-Audio Studiophile AV 40
Tannoy Reveal 501a ($175 each)
Mackie MR5 ($150 each)
Roland MA-15D

Any help you all could provide would be appreciated!

I'd suggest the above... they can be had online well withing your price range... they have a one year warranty in case repairs are needed....

I have several of these and prefer them over many other brands in this price range. There are the smaller bx5a's but I'd really go for the bx8a deluxe set B&H Photo, online store normally has close to the lowest prices.

I've got the alesis m1active IIs, one generation down from the 520s. No problems with them, though I'd get the 620s.

Analogy- the 520's are on sale for under $200, and the reviews are stellar. This might be the way to go, since I'm trying not to spend too much.

The difference between the 520's 5" woofer and the 620's 6.5" woofer is not to be underestimated, at least if you don't have a subwoofer in your setup. The 620s reach down an additional fifth of an octave over the 520s. It doesn't sound like much, but consider that losing a fifth of an octave on the high end would mean losing nearly 3 khz.

If $360 for the 620s is too much, the MkIIs are still really good at $240.

i think you'd be hard pressed to beat that for bang for the buck.

I have a pair of Studiophiles, can't remember which model but they're about a foot tall, and they do the job quite nicely.

I saw that price at MusiciansFriend. Only $6 for shipping. The 2 year warranty is another $30. That's cheaper than Sweetwater.

I wanted to give you all a big thank you for helping me with this monitor situation. I just purchased the MKII's from MF (got another 10% off today), and I'm looking forward to working with them.

Hope everyone has a great Holiday season.

Cheers!!
