Default One Slot Input But Have Two Channel

Maybe this sound like a question from a child. I just want to know. Let's just say the situation is like this. We have an audio interface, in which it just have 2 slot. One for input and the other one for output (eg. Behringer USB Guitar Link). When we setup audio device via Option-Preference, then we ticked "Enable Input" Checkbox. There will definitely be a display : First Input : .......1, Last Input : ........2. The same is in the Track Control Panel. When we choose Input Mono, there was Input 1 and Input 2. Forgive my stupidity. I just think, there's only one input slot on audio device. Why the default input must be 1 and 2. Likewise if we have 4 slots, it will definitely detect 8 input channels. Thank you, if anyone can explain why the concept is like that.

But it won't.....if by 4 slots you mean 4 channels of interface they will show as 4 channels in Reaper.

I can't check if a mono device appears as single channel as only have multi channel devices but I would think it should....if not I would suspect the driver is the problem....does this mono device have an ASIO driver?
