rookie frustration
hey, i'm having trouble getting my recording and playback to work without cutting out and getting really choppy. i'm using a quad core hp with 8 gigs of ram, a presonus firestudio mobile with the windows 7 driver, and the most recent version of reaper. i've messed around with various settings today and can't seem to get any stable recordings...i'm assuming it's something stupid i'm overlooking. oh, and when i click on "asio configuration" nothing happens. thanks.

Hello leftoftheleft and welcome to these forums. You'll find many helpful people here and a lot of useful information.
But ... you'll have to tell us about what you have done so far, how you have set up the hardware and Reaper, etc. Then we should be able to point you in the right direction.

my set-up
howdy darkstar.
i've essentially followed the initial steps as mentioned in the up and running manual. under the Audio device settings i have:
-Audio system: ASIO
-ASIO Driver: ASIO PreSonus FireStudio
-Inputs enabled
-First: 1: FireStudio Mobile Mic 1
-Last: 10: FireStudio Mobile SPDIF R
-Output range:
-First: 1: FireStudio Mobile DAW 1
-Last: 6: FireStudio Mobile DAW6
(i am only using the headphone output right now, as i'm not getting monitors until later this week probably)
-in ASIO configuration (it popped up fine today), i have the Main mix bypassed as i don't have monitors set up yet, i have the headphone mix on and level across all channels, and the SPDIF is bypassed
-Request sample rate is checked and listed at 44100
-Pre-zero output buffers and Ignore ASIO reset messages are unchecked
-ASIO thread priority: Driver Default (recommended)
when i record, it'll be fine for a short bit, then where it says "Record" in the transport window, it flashes red and cuts out at random parts. my FireStudio remains in sync during these times. and the same thing will happen with playback, at different parts sometimes. it will say "Play" and flash red and stutter. and like i said, i've got a fast quad core system, 8 gigs of ram, 750 gig harddrive with barely anything on it.
sorry for the long post. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

What chipset does your FireWire card use? Lots of interfaces (Presonus included) are pretty fussy about this. From what I've read many times, the TI chipset is one of the only reliable choices.

Do you have this drop-out issue only within reaper? or does that happen with other audio apps?
I find that the legacy Firewire Driver in Win7 works better. Have you tried that?

i've only tried using it with reaper. the studio one software that was supposed to come with my firestudio wasn't in the box. it's supposed to be sent soon. and i know nothing of the legacy firewire driver. i'm not super up to date on computer issues. most of my recording in the past was done using stand-alone 4-tracks and 8-tracks.

I have yet to install the retail version of Win 7 on my main DAW, so I am not sure if they licked this issue or not. I'd say, however that this is worth a try...
- press the window's logo key and the Pause Break key at the same time.
- from the window that pops open select device manager
- Find the firewire controller in the list --> IEEE 1394 Bus Host controllers and expand that node.
- Find the card/controller that is connected to your audio interface.
- Right click and roll back the driver. when asked click select from specific device and select Have Disk
- From the window that pops open, select 1394 Legacy Driver
- reboot and see what happens.
I am typing this by memory - the computer I am currently on does not have any firewire, nor is it my daw... some of the steps and things are probably worded differently.
greetings

good advice however if your FW device has official windows 7 drivers then this step shouldn't be neccesary.
Have you dissabled speedstep, C1E and any other thermal throttling in your bios? these things can have adverse effect on real time audio.

hey, i haven't had a chance to try switching to the legacy driver yet. but it does say all over my firewire cards package that it is windows 7 ready. a big reason i ended up getting it.
as far as speedstep, C1E and any other thermal throttling in my bios, i haven't done any of that. don't even know anything about that haha. i've done a fair amount of work within a couple daws, but it's always been on systems that were already set up and functioning...never my own system. so i apologize for being pretty ignorant to a lot of these things.

LOFT, I am sorry to say I am also a presonus user and although their recording interfaces work well when they work, they are a nightmare company to get good drivers.
Example:
I have the presonus firestudio using XP (a very tried-and-true OS) and only their recent driver update from <6months ago helped me. You say you use Windows7, just go on the PS forums and see for yourself the problems with W7.
I would suggest contacting presonus and not wasting your time here. It is likely a driver issue. (though there is a 1% chance it isn't but I doubt it).
