Default Any way to suppress MIDI scan at startup?

So I have an annoying problem. M-Audio's driver support for the ProFire 610 under Mountain Lion is buggy and they have yet to fix it. The I/O does work when it's connected to this Retina MBP running Mountain Lion, BUT if I launch Reaper without the I/O being connected, Reaper hangs on "Scanning MIDI Hardware".

This pretty much sucks because I can't open projects unless the I/O is connected. So is there a way to temporarily suppress Reaper's scan of MIDI hardware at startup, like a switch or something?

M-Audio might never fix this driver. Thanks for any help.
