Default Dexed for Linux - Only mono?

Hi! I'm slowly entering the realm of Linux and testing its viability for, at least, some of my projects. Although I'll probably have many more doubts along the way, the first one is this : I installed a native version of Dexed with the terminal (sudo apt install dexed-vst) and while it did install it without any problem - an up-to date version and all - it only appears in a mono version. Rather weird, since the Windows version is always stereo by default. Am I doing/setting up something wrong? Using ALSA in the Audio Device section...

Thanks in advance!

I've only had Dexed since moving to Linux a year ago. In Windows I used FM7, which is stereo, and before that I had a real Yamaha DX-7 which was mono.

Welcome to Linux, Soli Deo Gloria!

Dexed for Linux is mono. I don't know about other platforms, I've only used it in Linux.

My understanding of the Dexed project is they want to faithfully reproduce the original DX-7, which was mono (I never owned a DX-7, but I have a TX-802 and although it has multiple outputs, the patches are all mono).

You can make it send it's mono signal to both stereo channels by clicking the "1 out" button in the upper right corner, and sending the mono output to both channels (squares 1 & 2: both black).

It's not stereo, but the mono signal comes out of both speakers.

Thank you very much, PMan, Glennbo and Mschnell!

Silly me! I saw the two outputs in Win and didn't realize it was dual mono.

Thanks for the Linux welcome! I had once tried to enter in this world, in 2017, but on that occasion I couldn't wrap my head around it. Now I'm just blown by the possibility - which I am already using - to carry a light OS with my preferred music production software and all the bread and butter computing apps in a little external SSD and run it in any of my machines without any problem. Gorgeous! I have to customize it step by step, while I continue working in Windows, but the idea is to slowly replace it and leave a single Win 7 install for those instruments that won't probably run in Linux (mainly, I'm thinking about EW's Play and the like).

I'll write from time to time here if I can't find my way with something. This time, I think the move will be really viable.

Greets!

For those who missed it. KVR member Blackwinny painstakingly
sorted ALL the worlds DX7 sysex files, eliminating duplicates,
naming errors and cruft. The result is a 10 meg archive
found (with simple useage guide) at this site:

direct link: http://hsjp.eu/downloads/Dexed/Dexed_cart_1.0.zip

Great instrument, great sounds, staying alive,
and getting better.

Welcome Soli!

Thanks for the info, 4duhwinnn! I already have it, but it's good to spread it since it's an incredible resource, indeed.

Would you mind sharing it, Mschnell? It would be nice to try it out...

Hi,
I don't understand how to install dexed. I try to install it with the command kindly posted by @Soli Deo Gloria

sudo apt install dexed-vst

but the terminal response is:

codesound@Codesound:~$ sudo apt install dexed-vst
[sudo] password for codesound:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package dexed-vst
codesound@Codesound:~$

What is the complete list of commands that I needed?

Thanks

Hi! I have to admit that I´m just diving in Linux and learning the basics. From the information I could gather up to now, I have learnt that using sudo apt-get install (for example, sudo apt-get install dexed-vst in this case), installs not only the app itself but all the implied dependencies. And, of course, Linux wizards could add to this any other detail or correct any misinformation I could be spreading.

This is one of the most difficult things in Linux, at least for us, Windows emigrees. I personally think that, while Linux has made enormous advances during these years, there is still a lot to improve in terms of user-frinedliness for the newcomers. I mean, all the super-power supplied by the console will always be there, but there is, in my humble opinion, a desperate necessity to ease the question of application installs, just as it already happens with the .deb packages and similar stuff. Probably, experienced Linux users will refuse my arguments, but while I´m decided to enter this realm and pay the price for the flexibility, there are many basic things that could be, by now, waaay easier, I think.

Rant apart, I continue with my Ubuntu Studio initiation...

Ubuntu have their "stores" Software for just browse and chose what ever, and if you prefer you can install Synaptic so you get simple text base result to find stuff.

If what you want is not there, then adding PPA or Snap/Flatpak to the thing should be possible, and we have something pretty new (to me) Appimages.

I am no senior penguin myself but i almost never use the terminal to get stuff, but then i've been mostly on Manjaro that is Arch-based and use AUR, and AUR has so much stuff at your fingertips it is nutts.
And on top of this AUR, Manjaro KDE got all of the above pre-installed.. (not PPA) lol
Manjaro's main repo is not so bad either

Mx Linux is Debian based and i think have made things easy nutts there also with repos and, Linux Mint goes with Flatpak as default in their shop and have both Ubuntu and Debian as a take your pick.iso

You have options

REAPER and other stuff you can just get as usual on sites and if you are on Manjaro and all you can get your hand on is a .deb then you can convert with arcalien blabla.deb into blabla .pkg.tar.gz (if AUR is "scary") and i guess if you should go with Fedora that also support new stuff, you can do the same i'm.. guessing

hang in there

Well, that's what we, Linux newbies, want to hear! I hope that in the coming years, the package-oriented solutions will prevail as a primary option. It's great to have the alternative of doing everything over the terminal, but it's still noticeable the tendency, in the web, to point the newbies to the console for everything. That is, in my opinion, too harsh of a rite of passage for my taste.

Thanks for the info, Samjjl, I'll check those resources...

No prrrRroblem'o

Sometimes if something is broken or have a solution just copy/paste into the console as a solution is bulletproof and fast and easy for the helpers.
Everytime i got help or find a solution, i paste it in a text file and save it in my "good to have around" folder that has a TaAaad better memorie than me. hehe

"Manjaro - enjoy the simplicity" feels like i'm cheating
