Default Notation view: Can I combine multiple tracks on a single staff?

I have two tracks, each with separate violin parts. Using the notation editor, I can see the parts on separate staves. I would like to see them on a single staff if possible.

Ideally, I could group parts together. For example, I would like to view all of my string parts on a single staff, and all of my wind parts on a different staff.

Is that possible?

Good question. The only way I can see to do this is by merging the parts at the item level, which doesn't really help in terms of hearing properly what you're editing.

AFAIK each track = one staff (or one grand staff, depending on which type of staff you select). So you'll need to glue items and put them on the same track for this.

Default ...as a copy:

IE keep the original tracks and copy the notes from all of them onto a new track. Good idea this; would help me see what's happening.

If you used an external notation editor you might have the option to open the midi/xml on one or seperate tracks (?)

Okay thanks for the suggestions. I adapted a custom action I found on a different post, here's what I ended up with. The point is to produce a single MIDI clip directly above the existing clips.

* Item: Duplicate Items
* Item: Set item mix behavior to always mix
* Item: Implode items across tracks onto items on one track
* Items: Glue items, ignoring time selection
* Edit: Cut items
* SWS: Insert track above selected tracks
* Go to start of time selection
* Item: Paste items/tracks
* Item: Set item mix behavior to project default

a further thought... if you might need it:

before combining all the item copies into a single item
set all the notes in each item to a diff channel

then set the midi ed. to show colors by channel

then select all notes in the combined item and view it in the notation view

you will see a color bar for each channel behind the notes for that channel
which might be helpful

That would be super useful! I'll try to figure out how to do that. For now, showing everything on a single clip is already a great start.
