Default No sound

Have been working with Reaper for a while
and getting on well.
But recently while in the middle of recording tracks I suddenly lost sound while trying play back.
Tried loading other projects and they play perfectly.
Did I do something obvious?
Any suggestions.
Regards

There's not much to go on.... did you lose sound from all tracks? Is it possible that the signal got too loud? Reaper can automute if that happens.... it should be pretty obvious just by looking at the Master track.

Thanks for your reply Fex.
Yes, lost sound from all 13 tracks
and Master track. I was adding Fx Limiter
when it happened. Setting Limiter to
-13db. The Master track and
all other tracks seem to be registering ok
but no sound output. If Reaper automuted how do I correct it?

Well, you'd fix the underlying problem, and unmute the Master track. If the Master track isn't muted, and doesn't have "MASTER AUTOMUTED" written where the meters used to be, then that wasn't it.

No, Master track doesn't have
"Master Automuted" written on it.
So this isn't my problem then?

Nope. Moving on....

So, you still have the project open? Still no sound?

Why were you adding the limiter?

I tried removing all fx from Master track. I was setting the Limiter so as to Render the project
with the intention of putting it
up on my YouTube channel.

Does the correct out to master show when you click on 'Route' in the mixer?.

Success!!!
Thanks a million. "Jiff41".
The Master track output was set to 0.
I set it to 1. It would have taken me forever to twig that.
Very much appreciated.

It's a Stereo out, so should be set to a pair eg; 1/2, 3/4 etc.

Thanks for your help.
Am I right in thinking that
I must use a Limiter and
set it to 13db before
Rendering and using it
in YouTube?

Almost certainly not!

I don't know YouTube's recommendations (perhaps you could tell us where you are getting your information from?) but I doubt that you are required to use a limiter. That would be up to you; you might prefer to achieve the target dB level using gain alone, without otherwise changing the audio content in any way.

Making sense of the dB recommendations would require that you know which standard/scale is being employed, but whichever is in play here, I dare to suggest that the advice would have been for -13dB rather than 13dB.

Sorry yes, certainly -13db.
I'm not that long using Reaper and finding
my as I go along. I previously used
the Boss 16 track.
I came across the Limiter information
in the Reaper videos. Rendering and Exporting. Setting the LUFS levels.
Am I missing something?

LUFS.
13dB/-13dB doesn't mean anything.
-13 LUFS means something.

And now I know your source, and I know you're "Setting the LUFS levels."

This is worth reading if you want to understand more about the subject (you probably don't need to yet):
https://www.sweetwater.com/insync/wh...should-i-care/

The article even refers to "YouTube’s -13 LUFS," so yes, I think we can take that to be correct.

If you want to hit that exact target, sure, use a limiter. Just make sure you know what you're doing, eg,

DON'T SET IT TO 13 LUFS!

Thanks for you advice,Fex. Really appreciate it. Like I said I'm new to
Reaper and only got into it lately. I find it most enjoyable and very interesting as I played music all my life but am now retired and I only got into the recording end of things as a pastime.
I realized there is a huge amount that I don't know and I am learning by my mistakes.
Again thanks for your help and I surely will take your advice.
Regards.

I also had the problem once, that suddenly the sound did not work anymore. But thanks for the advices, I will try them!

Further I often had the problems with the background noises. I wanted to reduce them and found this video which helped me solving my issue. Maybe some of you are interested in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31phzT7pxkk
