I made this with care for Brice layout but I don't know if it's possible to be injected in Reaper as a theme. At least, I was trying to achieve, what a dark theme will suppose to look if a little shadow, emboss can be made. Now that I try, I can confirm that Reaper can be tricky in the theme sector. To much regular polygons that distract your creativity. It's like, "hey, a regular polygon, we must fill it with a regular polygon button". There are tons of buttons and if all of them are regular I almost hear the SID chip in my brain screaming "Tetris, I don't have too much time, where to put it, I'm loosing my score..." So, the specialists, must avoid this type of geometry when they build groups of icons like those from the bottom in my images IMO. The smoothness that came with embossed elements is something that Reaper is needing everyday. The GUI become articulate, those knife lines that splits tracks don't hurts our dark side of the moon fragile parts, and we can live in peace. I hope you will find something useful in my modest attempt.

wow that's wonderful, keep us up to date, perhaps in another thread, more of a fan of this than the original

This is really good. IMO, you should start a new thread and ask to team up with a themer so you guys can collab on making this one happen. OCTAVE has a certain aesthetic to it and your mockup changes that. Neither is better or worse, just different, like your favourite songs. You even have a name already too (OKTANE), which can be a tribute and a reference to the original inspiration.
I, for one, would definitely use both.

Avatar44,
the only thing I do not like in your layouts are the VU greenish color.
I much prefer the interlaced VU meters but that is just me.
Everithing else you've done is just AMAZING! Great job, very clear and easy on my eyes. The "Tetris" is just perfect IMHO.

Avatar44: raising some nice points regarding track names, and track separation
I agree, with WALTER's freedom, what matters now is button placement, and efficiency, showing what's needed at given sizes, finding the right balance...
The look and feel could greatly evolve.
Nice mock-up, a truly different look & feel, very nice work, love the side notes,
In a scale of :
- flat (minimalistic)
- normal
- gradient freak (eye-candy)
I'd place my mock-up inbetween minimalistic and normal, yours towards "gradient freak" (between FL Studio and SAW Studio) while still remaing clean and clear.
IMO once we have set the general layout down, people can go "crazy" and post variations.
Glad to see some action in this thread even though I've been too busy lately and not contributing enough myself.

I favor the flatter minimalistic design but I do like how well the track names read in avatar's mockup - would love to see the names pop like that in Octave.

Brice, needless to say I am here in this thread because your works always inspire me... That was the first moment when you captured my soul. I like minimalist art too, but I like to think minimalism is good for colors part too. When our job is to work as fast as possible we must simplify and minimalism is the extra choice for this part. Think Ableton Live. Rainbow colors to simplify? I don't think so. Super thin lines between tracks, especially when tracks are full of commands buttons, faders etc? I'm afraid not. So, maybe flat is not wrong to be a great theme for Reaper, but I can't say like many guys here that Octave is shining as it is right now, because looks to busy in my eyes. Almost like a table full of square and every square has a different color. Still, there is something in Octave I like and that is why I create my mock-up, to see if I can go in a more "commercial-conventional" direction. In fact, I have no merit I'm not creating anything, I took your work and modified, most, smoothing surface here and there and then change some color. I don't now if this is "nice" or "not my taste, go away Devil"... What is sure for me is that I can work much faster when I respect some conventions. After I'm fixing my rules and I accept them I began to distort my reality in that respect, with care not to jump into the wild where unknown language live. That is why something classic live forever and something weird is good just for a handful of people at some moments.
I reply these lines to all of those people that aren't realize yet the need for a fast-clean-interface. Pro tools, Logic deliver aspects like these since Roman Empire...
If I understand well, Brice is telling us that the future is promising for creating great themes. My mission is over now, with such a statement. Thank you Brice for your time and your work. Much Respect!

where do DL this theme to try it out?
I'm a fan of dark hemes since they seems to better when Coloring as well as being easier on eye strain.

Yes, yes, yes, please guys keep with Brice's layout and keep the flat look, all those shades and enlightments are uncomfortable to the eyes.

A BIG +1 for splitting this in two versions. I love Avatar44's MCP really easy and pleasant to use, to me at least. Though i much preffer an interlaced Meter not confortable with the current design though some other ppl may preffer it this way.

Once the theme and layout are all put together, it'll be trivial for someone who wants different colors or a more 3D look to edit the images as they see fit.

I think the title "OCTAVE - Open Community Theme" give me the right to call this quote "the empty words of a moralist wolf".

Looks nice, not sure if it can be implemented for the FX:
the "FX" and the "off" in the old design have been implemented as two different buttons, and on inserting FX, I don't think that walter has a variable for the fx state so the position of the "FX" and "off" can't be swapped by using a conditional.

I think its a very cool idea - because you see right away whether the default state has been changed.
Some visual alteration of the button to make it say "switch" might make everyone happy?

personally I've always liked the 'switch' look... and in my own them use it a lot... but, ummm is that Latch button reversed? should not the L be down under the symbol?

Just a quick -1 on the OCTANE theme being better than OCTAVE.
The original OCTAVE theme is understated whilst the other one is a bit garish for my taste.
It seems to be from other themes/hosts that grey is the new black, which I'm not a fan of. Dark is good.
Just my £0.02

I think OKTANE should start his own thread, the concepts between the two themes are very different. I like more the Brice point of view but I would like to see more work on it. I think Brice has a good point in keeping the layout flat and easy on the eyes but it is time to see some TCP layouts.

is this the end of this wonderful theme now? I'm moving to another town at the moment, but if this is over I would like to help to bring OCTAVE into a final version!
any plans or suggestions what to do next?
cheers

I sure hope this theme sees the light of day. But it's been 2.5 weeks since Brice's last post in this thread.
Hopefully he's just been busy and had no time to focus here but will eventually finish it up.

Yeah, I hate to see this beautiful theme languish. Brice has not posted in this thread in the last month. Not sure if he's just been too busy to work on this or has decided to step away. I sure hope not.

Opinion:
I think Silent has the formula for success with his REACTION theme: create the theme yourself and be open to helpful input. Otherwise, things simply flounder because no one wants to really pick up the ball, especially when it's not theirs. Brice's theme is his theme, not ours. I think he would be wiser to finish it himself and simply accept our input if it suits his needs. That way, it gets done.
EDIT: boy, my spelling sucked in this post.
