Default Good Free Bass VST

Any recommendations? I'm hoping it not an oxymoron

I've tried getting the 4front one to work, but it's a .component and I'm not sure how to make it work.

Thx

I'd recommend search kvraudio's database...

Although no longer officially supported, TAL Bassline (synth) has a cool retro sound

.component is an AU plugin. You need to place it in the appropriate plugin folder. Look here:

Thx for the reply. I have 4frontbass.component saved in there (along with Addictive drums which does work). Just can't get that (or acousticbass.component) to work ....

my short list:
tb4005
taurus
synth1
tyrell n6
zebralette
mono/fury
and ill often add a Reasynth sine osc with these as a sub

with synths i'd recommend layering 2 or three with different frequency ranges to create your bass sound. helps a lot.

Sorry, I should have specified in my OP that I was looking more for bass guitar, not bass synth.

4Front Bass is simple but good.....

BTW - just to elaborate. As I'm sure you know, there are two ways to get that bass guitar sound with plugins. Been recommending synths, but sampling is another way to go. For some decent free bass stuff, try looking at Kontact Player and SampleTank free.

4front also comes as a VSTi, I believe - can you try that?

+1 for Kontakt Player too, that might work for you. I have lots of the SampleTank stuff as well, but unfortunately it tends to crash Reaper when removing it from a track, which is quite annoying if you forget to save...

Thanks for the Kontakt suggestion. That and VB-1 should work plus lots of great other stuff. Is the full Kontact worth it?

The paid version of Konakt is worth it if you wish to use/build a library of high quality instruments. They have had a 50% off sale a few times if you're not in a hurry to get it. If my memory is correct, I saved about $200 on Kontakt 5 when it was on sale around Xmas 2012.

If you are just looking for a bass vsti and nothing else, there are probably less expensive options that may be satisfactory for you.

Sonivox (sonivoxmi.com) has a few decent bass DVIs (I especially like their Rick 4003) in the $20-50 range if you don't have an aversion to PACE authorization.

And there are some decent basses out there in .sf2 and .sfz too put out by Soundbrewer.com, Manytone.com, and DigitalSoundFactory.com.

I used the Scarabee bass in Kontakt for a punk project and people were blown away by how realistic it sounded.

A lot of fine tuning and such, but it can definitely get you where you want to go.

Lots of good SFZ bass sounds available, among others.

http://www.bandshed.net/sounds/sfz/

http://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=11865

Then there are dedicated plugins to dabble with like:

I would second this. There are some excellent free soundfonts that would work for you. There is also a good free Steinberg plugin at

http://www.steinberg.net/en/support/...ics_vol_1.html

I really like it, good Precision Bass sounds you can modify. It's also 64 bit for all platforms.

The Samsara free stuff is excellent but sadly don't think any are OS X, which is where the OP posted.

I love this plugin but I have had it crash Reaper (versions 4 through 5) almost every time I've had it in a project (and only that plugin). Not very reliable. TAL's paid version is more in-depth ... very cheap upgrade (and better-sounding than that unstable, free one)
