The clips stream okay, though.

Flash is 9.0r124
How long, at 6Mbps, should it sit there like that? Over a minute? (I get bored easily...)

No it should load by then, flash 10 is the latest I think, but maybe its being blocked by something.
With how bad you said ya machine is at the mo PLJ else where I wonder if its worth hunting to fix the prob and maybe just a dirty install of XP to fix most probably.
You'd have to update some things again but least you wouldn't lose more.
You can do this 2 ways, 2nd screen on xp setup you choose to fix current installation or normal install but when it says windows already exists, all files will be lost, well windows files will be renewed but rest should stay in tact.
Then u need to copy your doc and settings folder for your old user name to the new one it makes.
If first option works to repair installation then that last step won't be needed.
But also try a scan disc on windows boot, if u scan C: it should initiate a scan on next boot. Sometimes this can fix problems that your pc is suffering that u mentioned else where.

Upgraded to Flash10 - no change. Nothing interesting on Firefox's error console.
Tried it in IE for laugh and it does exactly the same.
Does it depend on WMP or related libraries at all? I've maybe killed that. Anything that thinks about DRM dies.

Ain't sure about the WMP although when I've used many tv type sites online when some refer to different links they will say WMP and its flash so maybe it does.
It might be worth looking for a WMP remover or/and Falsh remover, which if there are any they would completely remove everything associated with both programs. Sometimes uninstalling won't remove all or a bad install can leave registry entries and files spanned over your system which a reinstall or uninstall won't always removed or delete reg entries.
Its a bit tricky manually deleting both as both are well integrated into windows so you could remove handlers that are setup when installing windows which might be re assigned when reinstall wmp or flash.
If you updated WMP and it mucked up will it uninstall the update from add/remove programs? If it whines files are missing try running the installer for the last version you had on that your trying to uninstall, but start the setup, let it unpack all files to the temp dirs, then uninstall from add/remove programs. If it then comes uop saying so and so is missing in so and so dir go to start then run, type %temp% and ok, a folder will come up, do a search of that folder for the file it says it can't find, hopefully it will have unpacked when you ran the wmp install, now just make a dir to the location that its whining its missing from.
This is why it is important you run the setup of the exact version of wmp your trying to uninstall so the missing files are exact.
But in the registry there may be a reference to the path of the missing file which you could export out, then delete, then you have it to import back in if needed. But you should only go in the registry if it makes sense, if you or anyone else is not sure whats going on in there then exit regedit and don't change nothing.
But you'd be surprised how many people have the same problem and most times there's some clever chap who wrote a fix or tells or exact steps to rid yourself of the problems.
If ya have no luck then were have to arrange a time and I'll do a remote desktop using logmein or similar and I'll try fix as much as possible, could take a few hours could take 20 mins.
