Default software ilok-manager in your linux? share your details?

I've read a few success stories, people with MX Linux,
and maybe others, would you please share your success stories,
or partial successes, so we can get this in the win column?

Will help knowing your kernel, wine version, distro, desktop environment,
daw, alsa or jackd, extras installed in wine along the way, along with
basic hardware, cpu, motherboard brand, or other relevant steps you took
Cheers

Had a temporary success in Mint 18, the ilok-manager installed OK,
I installed AIR Music Tech's Boom drum machine, went to the
ilok-manager website, registered the software, and after finding it's
sound-set, it worked fine (in Reaper 5.961/wine-staging 3.21)

Next, I installed AIR's Hybrid3 synth, and when trying to register it,
errors started showing up, and then even Boom no longer can load.
Will be checking on a fresh wine in a little while.
Cheers

It looks to me like something in Hybrid3's install regimen
modified the version of Apple's BonJour network tool,
which get's installed by i-lok -manager. I think Boom is
a much newer refugee from Pro Tools, than Hybrid3,
and Hybrid wanted an older BonJour.

Maybe it's just an oversite in programming that a regression
is allowed. The coders maybe thought it would be Pro Tools
forever an ever.

It can be a pain to deal with BonJour, because it can block
Reaper from starting in some scenarios, mDNSResponder may
be the nuisance tool. Might need to keep Reaper's
version-checking off. If I was in Seattle, I'd be sleepless.

I'm using it succesfully since last year IIRC. I posted this in another thread:

"It does not need any wine override. I've created the fresh wineprefix, ran 'License Support Win64.exe' and then ran '[...]/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/iLok License Manager/iLok License Manager.exe' and that was it. From there you login into your account and authorise things, then run the plugins (they have to be installed in the same wineprefix as the iLok manager) with LinVST or whatever and that's all"

I'm using Arch Linux, linux-ck 4.19.5, wine-tkg-git 4.21, i7 6700k, a 1060 6Gb card... don't know which of these specs are relevant, except maybe for the distro. First time I got it runing was with wine-staging, but it also worked with wine vanilla

I'm on Manjaro/KDE with latest kernel 4.19.5-2, Wine-Staging 3.21-1 and just installed latest ilok manager under wine. I can't even get License Manager to open.

Are you by chance using 32-bit wine and ilok manager? I'm trying using 64-bit and no luck whatsoever.

I'm not. What does it output when you start the application in a terminal emulator?

Thanks for your update! I'll try some different
and more stable wines. Do you have any
AIR aiep3 plugins installed?

I just managed to get this to work.

Archlinux, wine 3.21 with no overrides.

Steps (possibly ignore my use of a wine prefix, but on the other hand be careful with your activations so that you don't lose them)...

1. Create a new wineprefix only for soundtoys.
WINEPREFIX=~/.wvst-prefixes/soundtoys winecfg

2. Install soundtoys and ilok/bonjour.
WINEPREFIX=~/.wvst-prefixes/soundtoys wine ~/Software/Plugins/soundtoys/Soundtoys5_5.3.0.14027_64.exe

3. Run the ilok manager and activate the plugins to your local computer.
WINEPREFIX=~/.wvst-prefixes/soundtoys wine ~/.wvst-prefixes/soundtoys/drive_c/Program\ Files\ \(x86\)/iLok\ License\ Manager/iLok\ License\ Manager.exe

4. Add the needed LinVst .so files.
5. Start reaper and let it scan the plugins.

Note that this failed with wine staging 3.21, the reason I didn't get it working before. Seems not to start the needed "PaceLicenseDServices" service.

I do the following to manage my wine prefixes. It makes it easier to manage my windows plugins and overrides, but might also come at a theoretical or actual performance cost.

I created the ~/.wvst directory which I include in Reaper's VST scanning path. It's the only reference in the plugin scan path to my windows plugins.

Then I ran "ln -s ~/.wvst-prefixes/soundtoys/drive_c/Program\ Files/Vstplugins/Soundtoys ~/.wvst/soundtoys" to create a symbolic link to where the actual libs are located. I've similarly symlinked the VstPlugins directories of other prefixes in the same directory.

Wow, was somewhat doubting to ever seeing ilok working in wine! Am very pleased finally having access to echoboy and others in Reaper for Linux!

Thanks so much for this step-by-step, Jack. Much appreciated for those of us still getting our feet wet in Linux.

Yes, Hybrid and Xpand!2. Other working iLok plugins that I have installed are:

Soundtoys 5 bundle
2016 Stereo Room - Eventide
Ultrachannel - Eventide
EQuivocate - Eventide (Newfangled Audio)
Time and Tone bundle - Softube

(all good one-time freebies except for Soundtoys)

I like to have a wineprefix only for iLok and these plugins because this program doesn't get along with wine overrides that are needed to get some other plugins working

Almost forgot: to get some graphics working in plugins like PanMan and FilterFreak run winetricks gdiplus on its wineprefix

Thanks to all for the extra infos. I went and got a little ssd
to install Arch Manjaro, it's updating at the moment,
and then I'll add wine, and see if I can replicate
these nice success stories. www.pluginboutique.com often has
a variety of AIR Music Tech products, usually with
a couple low-priced teasers, if anyone wants
to join in the fun, at little risk.

I'd urge you to be careful with this. Today I had problems starting the ilok license mgr. Now I get into it again, but my licenses went down a black hole... Maybe because I tried to start the whole thing under wine-staging, who knows.

But I'd say that some precautions are probably needed, and some intensive testing with a few licenses you don't care about.

Using Arch wine 3.20, I was able to get AIR's Hybrid3,
Vacuum, and Boom installed
and authorized in the, ilok-manager, but during scanning,
newest Reaper-in-wine popped up an error saying the software
needed to authorize them was not available, even though
it was running with the authorizations displayed (so why would reaper
need something more?) Same result after shutting down
the manager, and retrying.

But it's a good refresher on using an Arch system.
With Enlightenment desktop, and 'yay' package manager,
it will be a keeper. I filled in a good supply
of plugins-san-drama, to enjoy, as the ilok science
gets better.

I notice that Hybrid and Vacuum asked if I wanted
to remove or repair the Bon Jour setup. I cancelled
the dialog one time, chose repair another time.
I doubt Bon Jour a blessing within linux-wine.
Maybe a gamer used to playing on a network would know
something.
Cheers

I'm happy to report that soundtoys was fine enough to restore my licenses! Still as there appears to be a real risk of losing licenses, be careful!

Well I see all my licenses in the ilok manager. I can also install them into the local machine. For me the problem came the next day, when the local machine no longer had any valid licenses installed..

Maybe caused by running wine-staging in between, but not sure about that. What also puzzles me is that sometimes I have to run the manager a couple of times before it starts up, after that it starts up at first try. No real pattern I've discerned as to how this happens or not.

Also do you have a dongle, does that work?

Thanks for reporting success. Do your plugins run OK?
Is a Bon Jour dialog ever presented asking to repair or remove it?
Installing AIR Hybrid 3 presents that in my case.

Hybrid 3 is $1 at pluginboutique.com if you'd like to
(cautiously) test it.
Cheers

edit: would you describe your avlinux as mostly 'stock',
or having had significant updates before installing ilok-manager?
Have you noticed any interesting terminal output
from wine, when loading an iloked plugin?

My avlinux is definitely stock, I installed the iLok-manager as a test because of this thread and found out that it worked right after installing and login in.

All plugins are working well with Reaper in Wine and Reaper in Linux and Linvst (Well not all plugins open in LinVst).

Thanks much for the confirmation. I think I'll try installing in
an avlinux in live session. Burned a dvd a few months back.
gmac has been churning out new avlinux versions every year for ages.

I don't get this ball running like you guys. I installed AVLinux and I could install iLok Manager so I can see my previous apps.

I tried to install Xpand2 but this comes up via terminal:

I needed winetricks msxml3 to install ILok with Wine Staging 4.3

You also seem to have some sort of path problem, I would suggest to delete the wineprefix and start again.

How is that possible when I have done new fresh installation? Is it Wine itself making this when it gets installed?

What happend to the apps I already have installed via Wine, do I have reinstall them again? Had little problem with Spitfire LABS and now I got it working again. Isn't there any repair app for Wine so everything gets in place?

A lot of things are possible with Wine, depending on it's current state.

If you delete the wineprefix then yes anything that was installed into it will go.

Try installing winetricks msxml3 first and maybe redownload the iLok installer in case it got corrupted somehow and then try installing it (before thinking about deleting the wineprefix).

I got the same msi installer error (Wine Staging 4.3/MXLinux ie Debian Stretch) as you did in your thread and I installed winetricks msxml3 and then it was ok.

This is really fun NOT!

Can't install msxml3. Tons of errors.

Ha, found this little trick to install a newer version: sudo winetricks --self-update. Now msxml3 got installed and iLOK. Now it's turn for Xpand.

I'm concerned about 'losing' licenses, has iLok Manager in WINE turned out to be safe for everybody?

In terms of 'jargon', I think licenses and activations are different.
You purchased a license.
The license allows 2 activations
The License manager displays the current status
of your activations, and allows/requires you to de-activate
and re-activate as needed, for times your system(s)
is changed, replaced, repaired etc.

There is an official company forum at kvr, user sbangs
is the AIR rep, and has helped people successfully

https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=265

As long as the ilok license manager gui is responsive,
and displays the licenses you know you have, and their
activation status, I doubt there will be anything lost.
It is after all, a system designed for pro's with deadlines to meet,
having lawyers in their rollodex.
Screenshots of purchase steps, and manager displays
are good luck
Cheers

Thanks for clearing that up. I had seen another user post that they had lost their licenses. I didn't want to place them on my machine and then do something to break WINE/Linux, but it sounds like if something happened, it would be a matter of re-activating an existing activation of the same machine, right?

The strategerie I'm going to use, is to keep a separate wine
just for ilok software, as a learning environ, and find an ilok
licenser version that is predictable to set up and use.
And in the process, attempt activating plugins that are
extras, or duplicattes purchased too cheap to worry about.

I you have time and money invested in a working collection
of ilok software, I think using a separate computer
for linux and the separate licenses would be good,
and possibly opening a second ilok account to keep things
really separate. PACE has pretty invasive permissions,
and probably won't think in linux terms, so a dual-boot setup
using one motherboard might not thrive during experiments.
Linux and wine are easy enough to fix/update/replace,
but a commercial OS can rack up the man-hours
and frustrations in short order. The manager has
an ID system, so it's easy to see which computer the activations
are established. But when on Computer A, you couldn't
change the status of activations on computer B.

Cheers

Cut and paste from what I posted on linuxmusicians.com today.

FWIW, I did install my Soundtoys plugins in wine a few months ago. Initially I had no problems at all, but at some point it didn't find the licenses anymore. Maybe it was related to updating the wineprefix with a new wine version. Soundtoys were very understanding and gave me new licenses!

I'd urge a long testing period and some caution

I really ought to do some thorough testing of this, as I've gotten a lot of demo licenses from Soundtoys. Just been quite burnt out lately preferring other activities to messing with computers..
