Default VST3 I/O Assignment with >2 Track channels can crash Reaper

System Specifications
  • OS Version: macOS 10.14.5
  • REAPER Version: 5.979
Description of issue:
  • Expected behaviour: Reaper updates channel count on VST3 plugins.

"Inform plug-ins when track channel count changes" is on.
  • What actually occurs: Reaper appears to be giving information to plugins which potentially can cause a crash, or cause improper I/O mapping.
Steps to reproduce the issue:

There are two ways to reproduce this.

Softube Console 1
  • Insert Softube Console 1
  • Observe plugin I/O - Should Read 3/2
  • Set track count to 4

With a track channel count of >2, Softube Console 1 will instead produce an I/O scheme of 2/1. (This makes the right channel sidechain the left channel)

The channel count should be n+1/n.

Izotope Ozone
  • Insert Izotope Ozone (Latest as of this post)
  • Set track count to 4

Reaper will now crash. This happens with any Izotope product I tried that has sidechain capability.

Originally I thought this was a Console 1 bug, however the ability to crash Reaper with Izotope products may indicate it's something Reaper can deal with?

I was unable to find another DAW that behaves similar to Reaper in this regard.

I did see that many plugins update their I/O count as expected, without error.

You can try configuring how REAPER reports I/O to each plug-in by right clicking the I/O button, it is likely be possible to workaround these issues there.

If you'd like to post a crash report for the Izotope plug-ins that might be helpful, but if I remember correctly it's a bug on their end that needs to be fixed.
