Default REAPER in Win 10 - my headache>>your benefit

Here I will offer some advice that may save some people a lot of time and frustration.
After two instances of adding 3rd party VST's to REAPER's scan list, I found the following:
DO NOT 'clear cache and re-scan'. If you do, REAPER will hang trying to scan every .dll file on your C drive. You will need to force it to stop, re-install REAPER, and then it will give you all kinds of error messages on startup. If you have gotten to that point, the secret is to click through all of them - about 30 - and finally it will come back to life. This was never a problem for me in Win 7.
But in Win 10, you can save all this trouble by adding a VST, and simply restarting REAPER. DO NOT TOUCH 'clear cache and re-scan'!!!

If it rescanned all the DLLs on your C: drive, that means the VST path was set up incorrectly in the first place...

There's absolutely no problems here in W10 and with "Clear cache and rescan".

Clear cache and re-scan working fine on W10 here.

OOOOH I found "...;C:\;... in the list. that's probably it. Mr. Computer Dumba$$ strikes again with a wild premature rant :LOL

Thanks for the simple tip Dragon.

I wish they would add a few lines of code...

if(%SystemDrive%)
{
rtnVal = ShowDialog("You are about to scan the entire system drive, this is probably not what you want, are you sure? (y/n)");
if(!rtnVal)
return;
}

Because when it happens, it hurts, a lot.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ you know, this is a good idea - hope Justin sees this - a very simple check and warning - very few instances (if any) where you would want to start a scan at root and tie up your whole system - forever, forever, forever (for Ben and Holly addicts!).
