Default Can I record my bass part this way?

The guitar part for my instrumental is completely recorded. It uses a fast up and down picking pattern for much of it, similar to Ozzy's "I Don't Know" where Randy is up and down picking on his open A string.

My bass part will be doing the exact same thing for much of it, and even though I think I can do it, playing that fast on a bass that has thicker strings can be a bit challenging.

So I was wondering if I could slow down the playback of the guitar part to say 50 percent or whatever, then hit the Record button, and record my bass part at that slower tempo. Then when that's recorded, reset the tempo back to normal speed.

Can I do this? If I could record the bass part this way, sure would make it easier on me.

Of course when I slow the tempo of the guitar part down, the pitch must remain the same. I am still using the original version of Reaper, I have not downloaded any updates.

yes you should be able to do it that way, right click on the rate slider and set preserve pitch in audio items when changing master play rate

The version I bought was version 2.010. I'm still using that version. But I don't think it has that "Preserve pitch..." stuff. I think I have to download a newer version to get that.
