Thanks Geoff, this helped update my mental model of how it works. So if I get it correctly, state is always managed by the DAW. Where I was getting into issues was I also had state managed in the controller.

That makes sense, but the one thing I wonder now is when I have a Press with two messages, what's the second one? if it is alternating (which it seems to be), doesn't that go against that model.

Maybe so, but I've already got this controller behaving better overall than at any time prior, so I'm in front... and I haven't even looked at my other controllers yet.
Have dozens of other questions, but I'll try and ration them out rather than flooding the forum :-)
