I completely understand the "dilemma". I am a singer myself and could easily do what it takes in similar situations. But after years of Mutt Lange-wannabe-ing I've totally lost interest in have to record 100 voices just to get that "football choir" (which we, for lack of better words, call it in Sweden).
So, today, I use Waves/Abbey Road Reel ADT to reduce the take count at least one third. "Experts" will say that such plugins are not the same as the real thing, which of course they aren't, and that they (the "experts") can actually hear the difference in a final production (which of course the can't).
Although, it's not the 80's and 90's anymore, so I don't have to use Waves Reel ADT for "football choir" anymore. But I do use it for double tracking vocals.
