I've been able to record audio on an HP 360x Chromebook. I don't believe the setting sticks after reboots, but there is a setting in the Linux options to "Allow Linux to access your microphone". When turned on, it will allow audio input to be recorded (not limited to the Chromebook microphone, I've used a Beringer USB interface).

I hope it helps!
