Interesting result. I'm a little surprised, tbh. My interface probably wouldn't accomplish such a clean sine wave at 40Hz.
With those results (assuming they're concrete and repeatable), I think we can safely make the following statement(s):
1) Recording with average levels around -18dBFS can help with integration with hardware, allow plugins designed to emulate hardware enough headroom to function properly, allow the mixer to better utilize the resolution of the faders, and gives your performers some space to breathe (dynamically speaking) before clipping occurs.
2) However, "sound quality" MAY OR MAY NOT be a valid reason to record at average levels of -18dBFS, depending on interface quality, preamp quality, etc.
Can we all pretty much agree to those terms?
