There was an epic thread on this forum several years ago called "Why Do Your Recordings Sound Like Ass?" It's probably still stickied somewhere. One of the pieces of advice that the author, Yep, kept coming back to was to trust your ears. You should try putting the mic in different parts of your room, try it with and without the low cut, try placing yourself different distances from the mic. Just listen to the results and decide which sound you like best. Trust yourself.
