Using the solo buttons is not inconvenient for me, but if you have a big MIDI window open hiding the controls, maybe you want to look at using keyboard shortcuts.

I would recommend you make your tracks like this:

Music track
Folder for MIDI
---> MIDI 1
---> MIDI 2
---> et cetera

Make sure music track is track 1 and MIDI folder is track 2. Then assign keyboard shortcuts to mute track 1 and track 2 and you can switch back and forth easily.

The problem is you cannot use these while the MIDI editor is the open window.

You can do this using MIDI from a piano MIDI keyboard though. What kind of hardware do you have available?
