Default Recording MIDI sequences *from* a hardware sequencer

Greetings;

I'm new here. I love Reaper!

I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out how to record MIDI *data* sent from an external sequencer.
Here's one example: I'm using a reasonably sophisticated drum machine that has several sync options (click, various ppm, standard MIDI features).
Sometimes I want to just back things up, sometimes I want to record sequences to the external hardware for live (mostly the former).

My audio interface is a MOTU 828 Mk II, and my MIDI interface is a MOTU Midi Timepiece AV.

I'd also like to understand how to do this the other way: composing in Reaper and then loading into an external sequencer.

What should the master be in these situations? Should I be trying to use the transport application for the Timepiece (awkward)?
Should I just be pushing the start buttons at the same time and hoping for the best?

I've tried unsuccessfully to sort this out many times in the past. It's time to ask for help.

Sincerely,
