JBM, that is the worst way you could mount those speakers. One of their strong suits is imaging which you've absolutely destroyed. Comb filtering from the desk, ALL KINDS of resonances from the desk that the Auralex will doing nothing for, they're not at ear level, I could go on. And the dispersion pattern is probably not optimized for horizontal mounting.
At least put them where your Truths are. I don't put speakers on any kind of work surface any more. That kind of mounting makes even cheap PC speakers sound worse.
I'm extremely interested in the outcome of your QC issues.
