I guess it depends which plugins you mean, and what they are trying to achieve. A lot of analog modelled stuff can be hard to hear in the early onset of distortion and then quickly become ‘too much’ but that’s often true of the equipment they emulated.

If you’re looking for very smooth, gradual transitions into distortion I’d recommend Klanghelm SDRR, Fabfilter Saturn, any of the Slate Digital stuff, Toneboosters Reelbus (certainly 3, haven’t tried 4 yet), Audioassault XCTR, Elysia Phil’s Cascade.
