You need a machine with a logic board that supports thunderbolt. This is a hard line in the sand. Logic boards that do not natively support TB will not be able to be expanded with a pci card. The pci cards will only work with logic boards that already support TB. You might get some connectivity with a pci card and pre-TB logic board but you will not get stable full bandwidth.

TB was introduced in 2011. If you have an older logic board, TB is not an option. (At least not at full spec.)
