Sure, but
(obviously) a close mic'd signal needs less input gain to reach the same signal levels, so the point there was of a comparative nature. But yeah, I hear you and understand.
But
(of course) how much gain you need for a close mic'd vocal kinda directly depends on how loud the singer is singing.
