Nope
This should all be done using the folder structure on the hard drive Any other solution is reinventing the wheel and totally pointless Major disrespect to the developers of Reaper for doing it the way they have because in my mind it assumes that people will not be using other VST capable hosts Part of this is also the totally stupid naming Where does Reaper magic these plugin names from and why the hell aren't they just named exactly as the dll is named So when i have gone to the effort (Like a lot of people) to rename my plugins dll to say cyanide(dist).dll or utonic(drum).dll so that when i search for drum or dist these show up (In most of my other hosts i may add) This need to be sorted at some stage and i hope it is sooner rather than later Sorry to sound so offish but this is my number one pet peeve with Reaper now they have sorted out the MIDI performance I despise the FX browser currently NAS |

Nope nope.
I think these are two different FR, both with equal validity. Personally I favour the original request, but that's only because I don't care for a proper folder structure in my vsti folder and because I still use some (though very few) DX plugs as well. I am very happy that I can easily have them mixed with vst in the appropriate folders. Plus I appreciate the possibility to have the same plugin show up in multiple folders. I do understand and respect your request as well, NAS, but it is a different thing from what the OP wants to see. I agree with the naming confusion thing you mention. |

But I agree, we should be able to organize our effects and synths by categories, and without using hard drive folder structure! So that we can make our own "virtual fx bin" folder(s) and organize through them. |

As someone who downloads every free plugin under the sun, I totally appreciate how Reaper organizes them. I really had to play whack-a-mole in Cubase SX 3, trying to select the appropriate plug(it's just as bad as the XP Start menu). Having to physically move files about and rename them is a total pita. Subfolders would improve things even more, and being able to sort folders alphabetically would further reduce the time needed to find a particular plug.

Sure Lambdoid, and another big advantage of this would be the possibility of using it PLUGIN in more than one folder.

a) break every uninstall script b) if you're unlucky will force you to re-authorize again (or worse, reinstall) If you're so prudent to know your vst folder structure beforehand for the next 2 years, the HD approach will save you 5 minutes of work. But for slightly chaotic mortals like me seperating plugins from folders is a godsend: 'Where's blockfish? vst\FX?..nope...click.click.click..vst\freebies\fx ?..nope..click...'..ex-live user here. +1 from me |

I like organizing my plugins as well.
Type 'blo' to find Blockfish btw. As soon at the FX browser opens, you can enter a value for the filter. Autofocused. |

For example, just try changing the tempo manually while playing some MIDI, and hell breaks loose. |

Well from the replies all i can say is that the naysayers of what i said obviously do not use other hosts too
If they did it would be very clear that the current way of working is reinventing the wheel Well everyone to there own ;) NAS |

at the meantime you can put a shortcut to the REAPER settings folder,
which located in the OS user account folder. and edit/sort all these settings by your self. EDIT: they're allready alphabetic sorted. only folders don't. |

i was using the folderstructure of reaper, now i don`t anymore ... here`s what i did:
i used the rename feature to _add_ the type of fx to the name, i.e. "retro film tone" becomes "retro film tone [EQ]", "helix" became "helix [VA hybrid]", "pro53" became "pro 53 [VA]", etc ... that way i kinda tagged the plugins for keywords, and by including the brackets in the search, i`m instantly able to see just the plugs that fit to the search entry ... and even if i don`t use the search engine, i can still see what the plugin does just by looking at it ... a bit of initial work, but works for me ... |

beware, brok.
I did that for all my plugs and when I had it done I was enthusiastic. That tagged search was brilliant. Only thing missing are the JS plugs. Then for some reason I had to rescan the vstplugins folder... All aliases and tags gone with one big swoosh. I didn't bother redoing it yet. Take care EDIT: Ooops, awfully sorry I caused that irritation, brok. Indeed I had to do the full clear cache thing to stop a misbehaving plug from causing havoc. Of course a simple rescan or scan for new plugs does no harm. Sorry again for the headache. |

ahhhw, come on ... so rescanning the plugin directory kills all the renaming????? well, if this is really the case: 1. thanks for pointing thatone out 2. this is a real showstopper, a definitive nogo. i mean, come on, what good is a renaming feature that is destroyed by a rescan of the plugins?? as i see it, everytime i install a new plugin, the directory is resanned, right? so that would mean, as soon as i install a new plugin, the aliasing is down the toilette???? ahh, man, what a let down ... edit: just took the plunge and rescanned the directory, and the alasing stays perfectly intact here. i assume that the aliasing-kill only happens if you click "clear cache and rescan directory". however, i`m for a userdefined tagging possibility then in the plugin browser ... i.e. you define a tag by a text entry, and that becomes a button right above the filter list. every plugin is then tagable multiple by rightclick on the plugin name (tickable in the rightclick dropdown, where all user defined tags show up). i.e.: - make a tag-button called "compression" - then tag all the plugins that are compressors - make a tag-button called "eq" - then tag all the plugins that are eq`s. if a plugin is a channelstrip, which is made of compressor and eq, just tag this plugin with both, "eq" and "compressor" ... additionally you can make a tag called "channelstrip", and tag it with thatone, too ... imo that`s by far the fastest way to find a plugin that suits your needs ... you could also additionally tag the plugins by the company, so if you search for a plugin from company x, you can find all the plugs by that company just by tagging them ... that would be my idea for a better structuring of all the plugins one has ... |

i think this suggest can be very helpfull for managing plugins/presets
1. you can orgnaize them on your disk, and use any internal/external explorer to reach them. 2. you don't have to rescan every new freeware vst 3. you don't have to worry about missing setting. vote for it |
