Optimize the Ctrl+Drag (+) event
Make a best drag copy in piano roll or with items

In other DAW (Cubase for example) but with some Windows softwares too (like Word in paint mode), the drag copy works even if you've forgot to press the Ctrl key before to moving the notes you want to copy (the Ctrl key can be pressed after, at any time).
In Reaper, if you've already began to move (drag) your selected notes and forgot to press the Ctrl key, the copy will not work until, you drop your selected notes, and cancel your action, then press Ctrl key, then dragging notes again for copy...

The same behavior is observed with notes in piano roll, or with items in the main screen.

Maybe an option would be welcome ?

There's already an option for that:

Preferences->General->Advanced UI/System tweaks->[ ] Allow keyboard commands even when mouse-editing.

Please post in the forums first before posting to the tracker.

Thanks for your reply, but it doesn't work on my computer.
I'm going to create a new thread about this option, on the forum.

When i drag an item, I see the cross icon... but if press Ctrl while moving the item... and then drop the item, it is not copied, it is just moved...

I don't know why, but for me, it works only if I press Ctrl-key before draging item...

You have to [x] check the checkbox, not disable it. It should work...

but in your animated gif, it seems you press Ctrl key first, before dragging items... (not simple to show that this key is pressed while dragging)

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. It's easy to figure out by looking at the cursor. When you see the duplicate cursor coming after the 4-arrows cursor, that's me pressing Ctrl after I clicked on the item.

So, sorry to make you lose your time... (my computer is maybe the problem).
If I can ask, which tool do you use to make your animated gif ?

CONFIRMED! IT DOESN'T WORK! EvilDragon, how did you not catch this?

-After you move your mouse, you can no longer change what the click-drag will do. You can only change it while you haven't moved the mouse

edit: well... this might be just because the devs can't tell Reaper to "copy item from position before it was moved" know what I'm saying? so if you move, switch to copy, move some more, you've now moved the original position of the original item.

edit2: NEVERMIND! Same behavior whether the check box is enabled or disabled.

If this, could work with selected notes in the piano roll editor too, it would be great...

( ... I was on the way to throw my computer ;-) )

it still might be a limitation of the code rather than a bug.

If this works in Cubase, Word, Visio (or whatever...), I see 2 explanations or 2 behaviors :

- Either, it's because the dragging action is considered like a copy by default (the source position are initially copied in memory).
So if you drag items or notes without pressing Ctrl, the copy is prepared but not activated... until you press Ctrl to activate it...

- Either, when Copy is activated later (after that drag begans), the dragged stuff are copied at the initial position (this reverses the situation) when items or notes are dropped to the target position
(that gives the feel to the user, that is the target objects which is copied, but no).
