It looks like it's crashing while validating AU plugins. I don't think this will be something we can reproduce/fix unless you are able to narrow it down to a particular plugin. Though we certainly know that OSX Reaper has compatibility problems with many AU plugins.

Can you provide a list of AUs installed on your system? These are located in both /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components and ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components

It's possible your reaper-auplugins.ini file is corrupted (because Reaper crashed while writing it) -- could you try renaming that file (so Reaper won't find it)? If Reaper does then start, could you please post the bad reaper-auplugins.ini file here? Thanks.

it's the reaper.ini file and even if I change the text in it back to the way it was after I opened reaper but before it crashed, reaper still doesn't load

Hi EstataeMatt - I don't think your experience is typical, I've been using Reaper on mac for about a year and I've never had this problem (or any problem that severe!) ...

Do you have a reaper-auplugins.ini file? That file is written while Reaper is scanning AU plugins for validation, if one crashes during validation, the file might have been corrupted.

Reaper OSX has known problems with plugin compatibility, but crashing instantly on load is not typical.

I'll be clear here. there are two seperate crashes both of which report
Thread 0 Crashed:

1) delete application support/REAPER just to be sure
2) launch reaper
3) command T
4) click FX button on that track in the mixer section of the main window
5) CRASH (usually takes 500-1000 ms so it must be in a low priority thread)
6) try and open reaper back up
7) splash screen gets to "initializing application"
8) CRASH
9) delete everything other than reaper.ini inside appsupprt/reaper
10) splash screen stays up until "initializing application" and WHAM!
11) delete reaper.ini from appsupport/reaper
12) reaper opens fine.

IF I REMOVE THE LINE fxadd_vis=1 from reaper.ini , reaper loads fine but has the same problem

first of all, reaper doesn't create auplugins.ini until I hit that FX button. More importantly, After it crashes and I open up the file, its got plugins in there that only (as far I or command F or spotlight can tell) are in an "unused plugins" folder on my desktop. Where the hell could it be finding these files? is there a ktext with a list of plugins somewhere or something?

again to be clear, MacHD/Library/audio/plugins has nothing in it, and Me/Library/Audio/plugins has nothing in it

The system must keep a cache of all the installed AUs. That ini file does look normal. There's a possible bug in the cache reading that we'll fix for the next release, maybe that bug is triggering a problem with one of your AUs. Hopefully the fix will sort your problem.

no worries. I've got all my plugs back in the folder with no problem. So I guess one of those four files were the culprit. should add that to the knowledge bank
