ReaXcomp - Zipper noise is back

Problems in/with your version control system?

Zipper noise on gain changes in ReaXcomp was fixed in version 3.2 but in 3.52pre4 it's definitely back!


EDIT: Same for ReaDelay and ReaVocode!

What, you can't reproduce this with a sine wave signal? You need better ears schwa. Of course I'm not using standalone VSTs.

Not sure I would hear it on loudspeakers. But on headphones I can year zipper noises in those plugins when moving volume faders on a looped sine wave signal.

No, with reaxcomp on a sine wave, I cannot hear zipper noise (buffer size dependent quantized changes in level) when moving reaxcomp's gain slider (with a reaxcomp band set to compress the sine frequency), or ReaDelay's wet/dry sliders.

I also clearly hear it on my Technics HiFi speakers.


During live tweaking I even get some crackles in the sound, not just the zipper whine. In ReaVocode I don't get the zipper whine. Only small crackles there.


Voxengo SPAN shows the zipper whine as three spikes:

These three spikes are the zipper noise I think. They are not there when not teaking the gain faders. Same spikes are there in ReaDelay too.


Hope you this helps. And I hope you also can hear the artefacts in ReaVocode. Otherwise I need to record a live output to show you ...

Can't repro either, neither with your test project nor with my own.
Here's yours, 55Hz is low enough to see single waveforms and envelope at the same time

Maybe soundcard related? I'm at 48kHz, 256 samples ASIO (RME HDSP9632).

if I use 60 Hz sine wav.

The zipper noise in all of the reaplugs that was fixed a few months ago was caused by buffer-size dependent non-smooth changes in parameter values, that zipper noise is gone. The artifacts you are now identifying are not related to buffer size, instead they are byproducts of the specific audio processing that occurs.

As an analogy, when using a delay, adjusting the delay length during playback will always cause either a glitch in the audio, or a pitch change, because there is no way to smoothly transition from one time position to another without changing pitch (or doing some extreme timestretching) during the move. The ReaXComp artifacts when changing parameters during playback are similar, they are not caused by a bug or parameter not being smoothed properly.

That's the thing I hate in digital audio. All the time these weird noises, digital artefacts and buffer issues.

Simple volume adjustments causing such problems :(

But if you change this slowly it is far less noticable, why not
introduce a function that slowly changes the value instead
of as fast as mouse movement, it would decrease the noise
at a cost of slight response delay.
