Default Hypothetical question re: MIDI over TRS

Not Reaper specific, but I was just wondering: if it's possible to send MIDI over a TRS cable as some Korg and Arturia synths do, would it be possible to record that signal as audio and send it via an audio interface?

you can certainly send midi over trs cable or xlr. I use a lot of xlr cables in my live rig for midi signals because they are more robust than 5 pin din plugs.

But would you be able to record the midi NO its still a midi signal even if its running through a trs or xlr cable

Midi is a data signal not audio

From a theoretical standpoint, as long as the MIDI signal isn't operating any faster than the interface's Nyquist frequency you probably could. However, since this is analog hardware there's going to be a slight degradation in the signal that might make it unreadable as MIDI.

It'd be entertaining to try, but I wouldn't expect it to work.

That signal is + 5V/0V. Or is it +5/-5? Don't remember...

Anyway, that's out of the range of most audio interfaces, even with a -20 dB pad. And the frequency is around 32 kHz, IIRC. So you'd need to use at least a 96 kHz sample rate.

The square waves would show round shoulders. You'd need to clean up the signal when playing back. With a Schmitt-trigger, fi.

So in theory it could be done, in practice it's not worth the trouble...
