Default RPP file format: What is "VU 2" setting?

I stumbled over a problem with this setting, in a particular song and track it was set to "VU 3" resulting in a track meter being switched off.

My question: Where or what is the GUI switch/setting that is connected to this entry in the project file?

Sorry if this is the wrong board but in Tips & Tricks nobody seems to know, so I tried developers.. :-)

I solved my original problem (meter not working http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=190696) and used some spare time to do some tests.

Result: In my configuration the "VU X" parameter set to any even number let the track meter work. Setting it to an uneven number = No meter on this track.

Has maybe something to do with # of stereo channels or multi metering...

Anyway, my curiosity is satisfied so far...

In track performance menu (right click on track) you can disable meter for the track.
I don't know why the setting would be 3. And not 1 or 0 only.
